Want to start talking turkish in your every day life by asking simple questions ?
This list shows you some simple questions to memorize in order to start a conversation easily. You can select some of them and also prepare your answers.

The following questions use the 2nd person (sen). If you want to be more formal, add -iniz/-unuz to the verb.

1 - “Ne iş yapıyorsun ?”

Use it to ask for your interlocutor’s occupation.

You can also say : “ Mesleğin ne ? “ or “ Ne işle uğraşıyorsun ? “.

For example:

• Mühendisim, bir Türk şirketinde çalışıyorum.

  I am an engineer, I work in a turkish company.

• İstanbul’da bir lisede İngilizce öğretmeniyim.  

  I work as an english teacher in a high school in Istanbul.

• Muhasebeciyim.

  I am an accountant.

2 - “Kaç tane dil biliyorsun ?”

also “Kaç dil biliyorsun ?” or “Hangi dilleri konuşabiliyorsun ?”

You’re asking how many languages your interlocutor speaks.

Here are a list of some of the main languages:

Ingilizce, Türkçe, Fransızca, Almanca, Hollandaca, Ispanyolca, Portekizce, Italyanca,

Çince (chinese), Korece (korean), Japonca, Rusça, Ukraynaca.

• Ben iki dil biliyorum.

  I know two languages.

• İngilizce ve Almancayı ve akıcı konuşuyorum.

  I speak fluently English and German.

• Almanca çok az biliyorum ama İngilizceyi ileri seviyede biliyorum.

  I speak very little German but I am fluent in English.

Note:

• bir dil ileri seviyede bilmek - to know a language very well.

• sular seller gibi bir dili konuşmak - to speak a language very fluently.

3 - “Çaldığın enstrüman var mı ?“

This sentence means: Do you play an instrument ? 

Ask also “müzik aleti çalar mısın ?”

• Piyano çalıyorum.

  I play the piano.

• Gitar ve keman çalıyorum.

  I play the guitar and the violin.

4 - “En sevdiğin filmin hangisi ?”

or “En çok hangi filmi seviyorsun ?”

It means: “What is your favorite film ? “

• En sevdiğim film Titanic.

  My favorite film is Titanic.

5 - “Son zamanlarda özellikle hangi dizileri izliyorsun ?”

Which serie are you watching lately ?

or more informal: “Son zamanlarda hangi dizilere dadandın ?“ : “Which serie caught your attention recently ?“

Possible answers :

• Şu anda pek dizi izleyemiyorum. Ders notlarını devamlı gözden geçirdiğimden pek vaktim olmuyor. Derslerim için çok zaman harcıyorum.

  At the moment I don’t watch a lot of serie. I don't have much time because I constantly review my lecture notes. I spend a lot of time on my lessons.

• En son izlediğim dizi “Zeytin Ağacı”. Bu dizi uç arkadaşın hayatını anlatıyor. Kızlardan biri cerrah, bir diğeri instagramda moda ikonası ve sonuncusu ise kanser hastası.

  The last serie I watched is Zeytin Ağacı. This serie talks about the life of 3 friends. A girl is surgeon, another one is influencer and the other one has a cancer.

6 - “Çalışıyor musun ya da öğrenci misin ?”

Are you working or are you a student ?

These are 2 possible answers:

• Hâla öğrenciyim, Boğaziçi üniversitesi’nde okuyorum.

  I am still student, I study in Boğaziçi university.

• Üniversiteyi bitireli birkaç yıl oldu. O zamandan beri, mimar olarak çalışıyorum.

  I finished my studies a few years ago. Since then I work as an architect.

7 - “Hobilerin neler ?“

Say also “Boş zamanını nasıl değerlendiriyorsun ?“ or “Boş zamanında neler yapmaktan ?“

With these sentences, you ask: “What are your hobbies ?” or “How do you spend your free time“.

Possible answers :

• Piyano çalmak çok hoşuma gidiyor. Ben de futbol oynamayı çok seviyorum.

  I enjoy playing piano. I also like to play football.

• Seyahat etmeyi çok seviyorum. Boş zamanlarımda yurt dışına gitmeyi çok seviyorum.

  I love traveling. In my free-time I love going abroad.

8 - “Türk mutfağını çok seviyorum, en sevdiğin yemek nedir ?”

“I love turkish food, what is your favorite food ?”

• Dürüst olmak gerekirse, Türk mutfağını çok sevmiyorum, İtalyan veya Japon yemeklerini tercih ederim.

  To be honest I don’t like much turkish food, I prefer italian or japanese food.

9 - “Hangi takımı tutuyorsun ?”

“Which team do you support ?” (mainly futbol)

• Bütün ailem Galatasaraylı , bu yüzden ben de Galatasaray’ı tutuyorum.

  All my family support Galatasaray, for this reason I also support Galatasaray.

• Futbol maçlarını takip etmiyorum.

  I don’t follow football matchs.

10 - “Hangi tür müziği dinlersin ?”

“What sort of music do you listen to ?”

You can also say “Ne çeşit müzikten hoşlanırsın ?“ or “Ne tip müzik hoşuna gider ?“

• Her tür müziği dinlerim.

  I listen all kinds of music.
